Your work stays yours
You keep every right to the footage you review, the notes you write and the messages you send. We claim no rights to anything you make with Shutter. When you send a message or a review, you allow us to store it and show it to the friend you sent it to. We don't use it for anything else.
Your account
- You need to be at least 13 to create an account. If the law where you live sets a higher age for using online services without a parent's consent, you need to meet that age, or have that consent.
- An account is for one person. Don't share it, and don't sign up as someone else.
- Keep your sign-in details to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else has used your account. You're responsible for what happens under it.
- Sign-in is provided by Clerk, so their terms also apply to how you sign in.
Usernames and profiles
Your username, display name and picture are seen by your friends and by anyone you exchange friend requests with. Don't choose a name or picture that pretends to be another person or brand, that's offensive, or that breaks someone else's rights. We may change or take back a username that does, or one that's needed to stop confusion.
Friends and messages
You can only message people who have accepted your friend request, and anyone can turn down, remove or block a friend at any time. When you use Friends:
- Only send messages and reviews you have the right to share, and nothing confidential that isn't yours to pass on.
- Don't harass, threaten, or abuse anyone, and don't keep sending requests to someone who has declined or removed you.
- Don't send spam, scams, malicious links, or anything illegal, including sexual content involving anyone under 18.
- Don't post anyone else's private information without their permission.
You're responsible for what you send. We don't check messages before they're delivered, but we may look at, remove, or keep messages when they're reported or when the law requires it, and we may suspend accounts, clear usernames, names or pictures, end live sessions, or erase accounts that break these rules. A suspended account can't use Friends, sync or live sessions. To report someone, open your conversation with them and choose Report from the menu, or email the address below with their username. Please only report in good faith.
To keep Friends working for everyone, there are limits: up to 2,000 characters per message, 30 messages a minute, and 50 friend requests waiting at once. These may change.
Live sessions
When you host a live session, you choose who's invited, and you can hand playback control to someone else or end it for everyone. The same rules as Friends apply to everything shared in a session. Each person needs their own copy of the footage and the right to watch it; Shutter never sends footage between people.
Messages aren't an archive
Removing or blocking a friend deletes your whole conversation with them, for both of you, and it can't be undone. The other person can do that at any time, and can delete messages they sent. Keep your own copy of anything you need. Reviews you've added to your Shutter are kept separately.
Your notes
While notes sync is on, your notes are copied to your account and come back when you sign in on another device. With sync off, they're only on your device, and we can't recover them if your browser data is cleared or the device is lost. Either way, Download backup in Settings keeps a copy of your own. We work to keep synced notes safe, but don't treat sync as your only copy of anything important.
Slate and shared call sheets
Only add people's contact details to Slate with their permission. When you share a call sheet by link, you choose what's on it and who you send the link to, and you're responsible for that. Stop sharing a link as soon as it's no longer needed, for example if it reaches someone it shouldn't. Shared call sheets follow the same rules as Friends: nothing unlawful, abusive or that you don't have the right to share.
Tools
Shutter Tools are free calculators, given as is. Check anything that matters, such as storage for a shoot, against your camera maker's figures before you rely on it.
Paid plans
Paid plans and cloud uploads aren't available right now, and nothing is charged. If they open, we'll add their terms here first.
Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time from Settings, under Manage account. To have your profile and messages removed from Shutter's database as well, email us (see the privacy page). We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. Where we can, we'll tell you why.
Fair use
Don't use Shutter to break the law, to attack the service, to get around its limits, or to collect information about other users.
No warranty
Shutter is provided as it is. We work to keep it running and accurate, but we can't promise it will be free of errors or always available, and we aren't liable for losses from using it, to the extent the law allows.
Changes
If these terms change, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Using Shutter after that means you accept the new version.
